 October Volunteer of the Month

Ling H.

Ling H. (15) of parents Zengji and Xuefang H. is the October Volunteer of the Month for the Boys & Girls Club of Alpena-Youth Volunteer Corps.

Ling became a Youth Volunteer Corps member at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year program and has been a standout in the Youth Volunteer Corps program ever since.  She has currently performed almost 100 hours of dedicated service to the YVC of Alpena program. Ling brings a great attitude and a team oriented philosophy to the YVC and always does whatever it takes to complete a project.  Her energy level is contagious and she has the innate ability to fill a room with cheer and happiness.  She is an integral piece of the YVC program and someone that the community, school, YVC and BGCA can count on.

Ling decided to join the YVC because she wanted to help out the community and meet new people that shared her views on giving back and making a positive difference in the community she lives in all while having fun.  Ling is a well-rounded youth volunteer that has earned the admiration and reverence from the YVC and the community through her devotion to others and all the volunteer projects she endeavors.

One of Ling’s favorite service projects is being part of the pack crew that visits the NEMCSA warehouse and filling food boxes that will be distributed to community members. She enjoys this project because is shows how teens can come together, get organized and help out. Ling also enjoys helping with the Recycling Green Team and learning how to recycle and alleviate her footprint.

Ling says the best part of being in the Youth Volunteer Corps is that you get to help the community and its citizens through meaningful projects and have fun while doing it.  This is the attitude that the YVC tries to instill in all the volunteers.

Ling would encourage all youth to join the YVC.  She would tell potential new members that YVC is a really fun thing to do after school and you learn how to become more in tune with the community and you will benefit from the relationships that you make. There are a lot of different projects offered and there is something for everyone, so why not get involved.  Nothing can compare to the great feeling you get from helping others and having a great time while doing it. The YVC is something fun to do and it gives you a new perspective on the community.

Actively and eagerly participating in YVC projects, maintaining a positive attitude, and selflessly providing service to the community are all part of the criteria for being named Volunteer of the Month.  The YVC staff feels Ling excels in all of these areas.

The Boys & Girls Club of Alpena- Youth Volunteer Corps is a group of 11-18 year olds who participate in various meaningful service projects year round.  For more information or to join the YVC contact the Alpena High School YVC office at 358-5362 or the Boys and Girls Club at 356-0214 and ask for Brad Somers.  Parents with children 11-18 years old are encouraged to get their kids involved in meaningful community projects.  High School credit recovery is also available. All youth 11-18 are invited.
